Rising star secures Nottingham Forest academy place

03/07/2026 by Digital Media

Staff and pupils at The Glapton Academy in Clifton are celebrating after eight-year-old Sonny achieved a major milestone by signing a contract with Nottingham Forest Football Club.

Sonny, a Year 3 pupil who plays in midfield, has secured an academy contract with the club. He will now train twice a week and take part in competitive fixtures as part of Nottingham Forest’s academy set-up.

Sonny’s football journey began at a very young age, showing a natural ability and enthusiasm for the game from the age of two. He started out at Gedling Tornadoes (playing above his age group) before being scouted by Derby County and later Nottingham Forest. During his development, he also attracted interest from clubs including Aston Villa and Leicester City.

Alongside academy football, he continued to play grassroots for the Clifton All Whites, consistently competing above his age group, before making the decision to focus fully on Nottingham Forest as the next step in his development.

The Glapton Academy has supported Sonny and his family to balance his training commitments with his education, ensuring he continues to keep up with his learning alongside his football development.

Sonny said: “I am excited to play football all over the country and for a team I love. I am proud of myself.”

Sonny’s mum, Demi, said: “Sonny has shown a natural love for football from a very young age, and it was clear early on that he had something special. He has worked incredibly hard, often playing above his age group and taking every opportunity to develop his game. We are so proud of his dedication and the way he has embraced every challenge along the way.

“Signing with Nottingham Forest is a huge moment for him, and we are excited to see what comes next on his journey.”

Samantha Leek, Headteacher at The Glapton Academy, added: “We are bursting with pride to celebrate the incredible achievement of our very own Sonny, who has officially signed a contract with Nottingham Forest Football Club.

“His hard work, dedication and commitment have truly paid off and this is just the beginning of an exciting journey ahead.

“We can’t wait to follow his sporting success and continue supporting the football club he loves every step of the way. Congratulations, Sonny, we’re all behind you.”
