Leading national children’s charity, The Children’s Society, has opened a new book shop in the heart of Calverton on Thursday 8 May, bringing a cozy and enchanting shopping experience to the local community and supporting children and young people across the country to access support when it is needed.
Opened by The Children’s Society’s Chief Executive, Mark Russell, the new shop, located on St Wilfrid’s Square will become a wonderfully relaxing space to browse a wide array of pre-loved books, from action packed thrillers to classics and thought-provoking history and science books.
Emphasising sustainability and community, the shop will provide a great opportunity for locals to pack their bookshelves with second-hand bargains and pass on their favourite books to others all while funding support services nationally.
The Calverton Bookshop is the charity’s tenth shop in the region and their second in Calverton village, however it is their first bookshop in Nottinghamshire. All proceeds from sales will directly fund the charity’s work to support some of the country’s most vulnerable children, including those affected by exploitation, mental health challenges, young refugees and children and young people who go missing.
Antony Richards, Retail Regional Manager for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire at The Children’s Society, commented: “We have been part of the Calverton community for 12 years, and we are delighted to have opened another branch in the village. Our shops play a crucial role in raising the funds needed to support children and young people and we can’t wait to welcome the kind-hearted people of Calverton to our newest bookshop to make this space a powerhouse for good.”
The charity is also calling on the local community to get involved, in any way they can, through donations or volunteering – with lots of flexible volunteering opportunities available for anyone eager to contribute their time and energy to this meaningful cause:
“We need people with a passion for books and for making a difference in children’s lives. Anyone who has books they would like to pass on, or a spare weekend to give, we’d encourage to come down and see how they can support our cause.”
With over 100 charity shops and four book shops nationwide, the organisation has a proven track record of creating welcoming retail spaces that help raise millions of pounds to protect and support children and young people. The new Calverton book shop is expected to become a key part of the town’s community, proving that second-hand bargains can be a lifeline for young people.
Flexible and short volunteering hours are available Monday to Sunday for a range of different activities.
