Keyworth United girls return from landmark trip to Belgium

01/07/2024 by Digital Media

As the 2023/2024 football season was coming to the close, Keyworth United under 13’s girls were looking forward to a once in a lifeline experience, as they travelled over to Belgium for a four day European tour.

In total, two teams (the Predators and Wild Cats) made up of 30 girls with 30 parents, travelled over the English Channel by ferry, visiting Genk Football Club, a theme park, a chocolate factory and had a tour of the capital city, Brussels. They also played football matches against three Belgian clubs.

Before the trip began, the two teams raised over £7,000 in sponsorship to help pay for their tour. This was done through local bake sales, Christmas raffles, sponsored runs and scratch cards, just to name a few.

Adrien Pettiford, manager of the Predators explained: “It was incredible seeing the girls work collectively to make the trip possible. As part of the Predators team, we still have the original 16 girls that started their football journey three years ago.

“The journey with these girls has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever been involved in. Myself, my wife (who handles the copious amounts of admin) the two coaches who support me week in, week out, and the amazing parents who have been supportive from day one have all contributed to making some fantastic memories for the girls.

“We have all been blown away by the girls improving football and the amazing new friendships they have developed.

“The trip surpassed everyone’s expectations!”

Club chairman, Ian Thompson added: “Girls football is growing exponentially in this country and Keyworth United are leading the way in the local area with facilities to support girls wishing to play football from the age of 4.

“This trip was a fantastic experience for the girls, coaches and parents that travelled, giving the girls lifetime memories, life skills and education all through their love of football”.
