East Leake WI votes on ASD and ADHD support

10/08/2022 by Digital Media

In the lead-up to the NFWI Annual Meeting, WIs have been discussing the proposed resolution on ADHD and autism to decide how they wished to vote.

Our local delegate attended the meeting and heard from expert speakers Francesca Happé, professor of cognitive neuroscience at King’s College London and Ginny Russell, associate professor of sociology at the University of Exeter before casting the vote on behalf of East Leake WI.

We were delighted to hear that the resolution:

Women and girls presenting with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are going undiagnosed. The NFWI calls on the government and funding bodies to fund research into the female presentation of ASD and ADHD, and for action to be taken to improve the diagnosis process for women and girls, to ensure that they are equipped to better manage these conditions and do not suffer in silence. The NFWI further calls on WI members to raise awareness within their WIs of the issues facing women and girls with ASD and ADHD.

Passed with a majority of 96.5% which means it is now an NFWI mandate and will form the basis of a national WI campaign which we can get involved in locally.

We were delighted to welcome Geoff Harris to our monthly meeting who gave a very entertaining and informative talk about “The London No one Tells You About” taking us on a journey through history, across bridges, on theatre stages and highlighting hidden gems that people pass every day without realising their significance – we can now visit London with new eyes.

We also had a wonderful evening at Singin in the Rain in Nottingham where it actually did rain on stage with the dancers splashing the puddles over some of the audience!

Our upcoming activities include a Coffee and Craft afternoon where members can catch up over refreshments, a walk in Wollaton Park and lunch at the Star at West Leake.  Members are also looking forward to our Afternoon Tea Cruise on the Trent.

New to the village or been here a while? Then why not come along as a visitor and enjoy a pleasant evening, join in and find out more about us, we offer a warm welcome to a range of events and activities with fun and friendship.
