The West Bridgford and Rushcliffe Horticultural Society is now in its 120th year.
Following a two year break, the annual WBRHS Horticultural Show is back on the Calendar. This year’s show is taking place on Saturday 3 September, 12 noon to 3.45pm. The location for the show is St Pauls Church Hall, Boundary Road, West Bridgford, NG2 7BD.
There are 89 individual prize-winning classes, so there will be plenty to see, including home grown vegetables, fruit and flowers, home produce, floral art and a children’s section of crafted and arranged plant related makes. Admission to the hall is only £1 per person (children accompanied by adults are allowed in free of charge). Refreshments will be available.
A presentation of cups, medals and awards will be made by the Mayor of Rushcliffe, Councillor Tina Combellack at 3.45pm. Then, as some exhibitors do not wish to take all of their exhibits home, there will be an auction and the opportunity to take home some bargain fruit, vegetables and flowers.
Are you green fingered? Think you know your parsnips? Are your Dahlias and Chrysanthemums the talk of your street? Do you enjoy home baking and preserving or flower arranging? Why not have a bit of fun and put your home grown produce, baking and creativity to the test. Nervous about exhibiting? There are novice classes in the vegetable, fruit and flower sections. You never know, you could be a winner.
Organisers are keen to encourage children (14 years and under) to use their crafting skills and enter their own classes – decorating flowerpots or fairy cakes, producing miniature gardens, arranging cut flowers or making an animal, bird or fish from fruit and vegetable materials. The age of the child is taken into consideration when judging.
You don’t have to be a member of WBRHS to enter exhibits with the potential of winning cash prizes and maybe even a trophy, as all classes are open to the general public. Exhibitors are keen to be there soon after doors open to see if they have won.
With the exception of children’s classes which can be entered for free, the cost of entering each exhibit in a class is only 20p. All entries are paid for and ‘staged’ on tables the evening before the show (Friday 2nd September) between 6pm and 8.45pm.
Judging takes place on the Saturday morning by a panel of formally appointed and experienced judges. They determine the top three entries in each class (four for children’s classes), which are identified on the tables using prize cards.
