A local toy appeal by Tesco at Toton has helped bring festive cheer to families and young people across the community at Christmas.
The first delivery of toys was donated to Broxtowe Youth Homelessness (BYH), a charity that supports young people aged 16 to 25 who are at risk of homelessness or are already without a permanent home. Many of those supported by BYH also have young families of their own, and the organisation works closely with them to provide stability and support. In total, 25 toys were donated to BYH to be given out at their Christmas party.
Another delivery of the appeal went to Chilwell Family Hub, a vital service based close to the local Tesco store. The hub supports families at the heart of the community, with a core focus on improving outcomes for young children and their families. More than 100 toys were delivered to the hub and were gratefully received by staff and families alike.
Help also came from Stapleford Fire Station, whose crew stepped in when the volume of donated toys exceeded car capacity. Thanks to their support, the toys were safely transported — making a fire engine the organiser’s “special sleigh”.
Tesco Toton Community Champion Claire said: “Without the kindness and support of the customers and colleagues, none of this would have worked. The appeal has made a meaningful difference at Christmas, spreading joy to children and families who need it most and highlighting the strength of the local community when it comes together.”
