On Saturday 12 November the supporters of Education For The Children were delighted to come together at new Nottingham venture Upstairs At Cleaver & Wake.
They experienced the delights of Nottingham’s Laurence Henry’s fine dining experience, starting with a Guatemalan rum cocktail that had been especially devised for the occasion. Laurence was on-hand to welcome guests, introduce the scrumptious menu and he wowed guests by holding an impromptu raffle for him to cook a meal at home for one lucky winner.
West Bridgford based, Education For The Children has been supporting students in Guatemala for nearly 20 years and has so much to celebrate. But, with the fallout of the pandemic and massive economic uncertainty, raising funds to enable all of their programmes to continue is challenging. The Guatemalan currency, the quetzal, is closely linked to the US dollar and the harsh drop of the pound means that funding equipment, food, educational and medical supplies, plus teacher salaries, are much more expensive than just one year ago.
Lily Flaherty-York, Development & Fundraising Manager for Education For The Children said: ‘Laurence was the perfect host for our supporters. Cleaver & Wake is a fitting tribute to his talent. It is the talk of Nottingham and I know it will be a resounding success. Fundraising in the face of inflation and currency devaluation is tough right now, so Laurence’s support was a huge boost to the start of our shortfall campaign. All funds raised on the night will go to ensuring students at The School of Hope continue to receive education, nutrition and healthcare programmes’.
