An ExtraCare retirement village has been fundraising to send a much-loved gym instructor to the World Powerlifting Championships in Florida at the end of the year.
ExtraCare’s Lark Hill Retirement Village has been raising money including holding an auction for Maureen ‘Mo’ Proctor. Mo has been selected to represent Great Britain at the WPC World Championships in Orlando which runs from the 2nd – 5th November 2022.
Mo who has been a powerlifter for nine years, started in powerlifting at the age of 47 and is also a volunteer national referee for the British Powerlifting Union. Born and bred in Nottingham, fitness-mad Mo began in ice dancing before moving on to bodybuilding. Mo is no stranger to winning and already has ten British titles with three different federations under her belt during her time competing.
As well as competing at the BodyPower Fitness Expo at the NEC in Birmingham on six occasions, Mo currently holds the British, European and world records for all three lifts and total for the Masters 3 and Masters 4 90kg class.
Mo has worked at Lark Hill Village’s gym for three years, working closely with residents and external members alike on any health and fitness issues they may have. In her spare time, she coaches powerlifters and has visited two sheltered housing schemes to lead seated exercise sessions for residents weekly to maintain their mobility and wellbeing.
ExtraCare will fund half of Mo’s £3,000 budget. The money covers all training up to the event, accommodation, transport to and from the competition, team kit, and competition entry.
Offering Mo a lift of their own, staff and residents united in support by holding an auction. Lark Hill resident Julia even went a step further and found fantastic prizes to be auctioned off.
Mo has been touched by people’s generosity commenting: “After competing in Europe this will be my first time competing in this international arena in the USA. I will represent not only Team GB and The British Powerlifting Union, but also ExtraCare to the best of my ability. I hope to place as highly as possible in the competition, this has been a dream of mine. The fact that the village are all behind me helping me achieve my dream of competing in the states is absolutely amazing. I really can’t thank them enough.”
The support of Lark Hill Village, ExtraCare, and hopefully Nottingham will be firmly behind her!
