Keyworth United Lightning, an under-10 girls’ football team, recently clinched their division championship in the Young Elizabethan League (YEL). The journey began when the coaches made the decision to challenge their talented group of players against the boys.
Lightning were formed by bringing together players from three different teams: Keyworth United Warriors, Keyworth United Sparklers, and Burton Joyce. This collaboration created a fantastic squad ready to take on the challenge of the YEL. From the first game, the girls showed they were there to compete and quickly won the respect of opposition coaches and players with some fantastic performances.
The team’s journey was not without its hurdles and there were tough moments as the girls went on a winless run during their Winter Division. However, the girls never let their heads drop and their confidence grew with each game as they started to show what they were really capable of.
It was the first game of the Spring Division where the team really started to click with a fantastic comeback from 1-3 down to win 4-3 and claim all three points. The girls never looked back from here and went on to claim the Division title with a fantastic finish to their first season in the YEL.
With the championship trophy now proudly displayed in the clubhouse at Platt Lane, the girls are planning to continue challenging themselves by pushing for the Autumn Division Title as they enter their second season in the league.
Keyworth United Kobras another talented team from Keyworth United are currently preparing to enter the YEL at the start of the coming season. The Lightning coaches hope the team’s success continues to inspire more girls’ team to give it a go and challenge themselves against the boys.
