Green Flag Award for Firbeck Academy in Wollaton

27/06/2023 by Digital Media

The Firbeck Academy in Wollaton, part of Nova Education Trust, has been awarded a distinction for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.
This award is available in the UK but is also internationally recognised and is given for exceptional environmental action and learning within the school community.
Firbeck Academy’s eco-committee have worked tirelessly to improve the school and involved the entire school community in the project by creating an eco-suggestion box.
Measures introduced by the eco-committee include recycling and composting, as well as using more environmentally-friendly cleaning materials.
They have successfully introduced a clothes swap initiative, litter-picking and have planted eight fruit trees within the school grounds.
Elijah, who is part of the eco-committee said. “We want to make the school a better place and to help children want to come to school.
“If we don’t recycle, we would see certain animals die and become extinct.”
To enhance their learning, all pupils have visited Attenborough Nature Reserve to be able to engage and appreciate the importance of protecting nature.
Headteacher at Firbeck Academy, Sem Cao, said. “This is one of the many things we do to ensure pupils are knowledgeable about environmental issues and the impact they can have on the planet.
“It’s also a great opportunity for pupils to experience success and build character.”
An eco-friendly school community helps preserve the planet for future generations and helps children make informed decisions to make little changes now which will have a big impact on a greener future.
Schools can work through the programme at any pace they wish, but typically it can take one academic year to achieve the flag award.
