We hear much today about the problems that society faces: an ageing population, mental health issues, austerity, loneliness, problems with the NHS – sometimes the list seems endless – so it’s good to know that in the West Bridgford area we have something that might be able to help.
For a modest annual cost (£15) those not in full time employment can join WBu3a and get more out of life – be it improving their physical health or their mental well-being, finding a new interest or simply enjoying good company while doing something they love or want to learn. The organisation has over 60 different groups meeting weekly or monthly and covering a huge range of activities and interests.
As the brighter days have arrived there’s been no shortage of outings to enjoy via WBu3a. The Local History Group visited the Richard III Centre in Leicester and found it fascinating. The story of the end of the Plantagenet era, the mystery of the murdered Princes in the Tower and the tale of Richard III whose reign and life ended close to us at Bosworth made a splendid day out. Or, if cycling is your thing, you could enjoy one of the Cycling Group’s twice monthly outings; trips to Rutland Water, the Manifold Valley and the lovely countryside and lanes surrounding Elvaston Castle were all enjoyed in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, the members of the WBu3a Singing for Fun Group have been in good voice – raising their spirits and welcoming Spring at their twice monthly meetings. The group blow away the blues by singing songs from all eras; from pop to musicals, and music hall to disco. Rattling through songs to bring back happy memories and make you feel good. Occasionally joined by the u3a guitar group, Greythorn, there’s no solo singing so everyone can relax and enjoy the camaraderie of at least 40 other people; who could resist a few choruses and a bit of arm waving belting out Sweet Caroline or recalling The Beatles, Shirley Bassey, Abba, Petula Clark or Frank Sinatra to name just a few!
If, however, an active mind and learning new “stuff” is your penchant you might be interested
in the Science for Everyone group. As the name implies it’s for everyone not just scientists! Meeting once-a-month the group’s only requirement is just an interest in finding out about a variety of scientific topics. Recent meetings have looked at substance misuse, blood sugar and pre-diabetes, the scientific aspects of Stonehenge, the state of the NHS, and a visit to the British Geological Survey in Keyworth.
With over 700 members already making the most of life by taking advantage of what West Bridgford u3a has to offer it’s good to know that so many are benefiting from what’s available on our doorstep.
