In May we were delighted to welcome back Linda Davey from Nottinghamshire Federation to lead our Annual meeting and Resolution Debate. This is the chance for members to have their say and contribute to the business and campaigning side of the WI.
We have enjoyed a full programme of monthly meetings, events and activities this year as well as welcoming a variety of excellent speakers to our monthly meetings who were well received by members and a large number of visitors.
We were also pleased to participate in a number of village events starting with a sold out ‘Great British Bakes Stall’ at the East Leake Jubilee Beacon Lighting event, refreshments at the village show, a craft stall at the East Leake Christmas Fayre and a ‘Water or Wine?’ game at the East Leake May Fayre. These events gave us the opportunity to meet local residents and promote our WI and raise some much needed funds.
Our social events and activities included trips to Singin’ in the Rain at the Nottingham Concert Hall, The Mousetrap at the Theatre Royal Nottingham, an Afternoon Tea cruise on the River Trent and a visit to Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood as well as our monthly meals out, coffee outings and sociable strolls.
After the usual reports, Linda Davey led the elections which saw all our existing committee members being voted back in as well as Denise Graham re-elected President for 2023/4.
The resolution for this year ‘Clean Rivers for people and Wildlife’ was then presented. After a lot of discussion and input from members, especially around the state of our local brook, the majority voted for the resolution to be supported giving a discretionary vote to our delegate at the National Annual Meeting in Cardiff on Thursday 25th May.
A resolution is a call for change on a current issue in society and if a resolution is adopted it will go on to form the basis of a WI campaign and join the many issues that WI members have successfully campaigned on over the past 100 years.
After the business of the meeting members enjoyed social time, displays of photos depicting the past year’s events and activities and the chance to sign up for this month’s gatherings.
Our next monthly meeting is on Tuesday 13th June at 7.30pm in the village hall on Main Street when we will welcome Back Geoff Harris for ‘Folklore, Folk Tales amd Funny folk’.
Our new programme of speakers is now available on our page on the village website https://east-leake.co.uk/east-leake-womens-institute/ or look out for our new posters on the village noticeboards and outside the library.
New to the village or been here a while? Why not come along as a visitor, enjoy a pleasant evening and join in and find out more about us. We offer a warm welcome to a range of events and activities with fun and friendship.
