In June, a large number of members and three visitors welcomed Coleen Hempson who gave a very interesting and informative talk about East Midlands Airport.
It was fascinating to hear about how the airport had grown over the years from a humble airstrip to the international passenger and cargo airport it is today. She made particular reference to the community engagement side of the operation which aims to take the views and concerns of local residents into consideration. This ranges from planning future infrastructure to listening to specific problems encountered, for example, with aircraft noise.
We were reassured to learn that training flights are now not permitted after 6pm and that the airport is in constant discussion with their freight partners about lessening impact on villages under flight paths. This includes having restrictions on how much noise an aircraft can make and enforcing fines as well as encouraging the introduction of more modern practices even, in the future, electric aeroplanes!
We have had another busy month with members enjoying an afternoon of coffee and cake at Antlers Bistro at Manor Farm, a delicious evening meal at the Rancliffe Arms, Bunny and 2 teams of members competing in the Nottingham Federation Annual County Quiz.
We were also delighted to learn that the resolution for this year ‘Dental Health Matters’, which we unanimously voted to support, was passed nationally at the National Annual Meeting at the Royal
Albert Hall, London. This means it will now become an official WI campaign and our national representatives will join top level discussions aimed at resolving current problems.
After the business of the meeting, members enjoyed refreshments and social time as well as the chance to sign up for this month’s gatherings.
Our new programme of speakers is now available on our page on the village website https://east-leake.co.uk/east-leake-womens-institute/ or look out for our posters on the village noticeboards and outside the library.
New to the village or been here a while? Why not come along as a visitor, enjoy a pleasant evening and join in and find out more about us. We offer a warm welcome to a range of events and activities with fun and friendship. For further information please contact our Membership Secretary, Carolyn Barnett, on [email protected]
