In April 2024, James Kerry and his family’s lives were turned upside down when they found out that James had a malignant brain tumour.
Over the following months, James had four operations and intensive Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy which left the 8-year-old unable to walk.
Whilst still having treatment James began to make personalised bracelets and keyrings in aid of the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre at the University of Nottingham. He even sent the King and Queen keyrings and received a letter back from the Queen along with a donation.
Looking to raise £500, the determination of the youngster became apparent, and his target being smashed beyond all expectation. In total, Nottingham Forest fan James has made over 300 bracelets and keyrings. His fundraising total is currently over £30,000 (including gift aid) and still rising every day!
James, who lives in Beeston and is a keen footballer, has worked very hard to build the strength to stand and walk again.
Dad Paul explained: “Following the diagnosis, our lives were turned upside down, it was devastating. James has spent a lot of time in hospital but he has tried to see his friends as much as possible. He has recently started going back into school for a few hours a day which he is enjoying”.
Some of you may have seen James recently at Nottingham Forest Football Club and on their social media channels. He has become a real favourite with the players, particularly England international Morgan Gibbs-White. As another part of James’ fundraising efforts and showing a sign of the 8-year-olds incredible progress, the pair recently walked around the City Ground pitch as part of James’ birthday celebrations. Morgan presented James with tickets for an upcoming Forest game as a birthday gift.
Not only did James go to the match on Saturday 8th March, James got to join the Forest vice-captain as the teams walked out before the 1-0 victory over current Premier League Champions Manchester City at the City Ground. He also had a special mention on Match of the Day from the commentator Guy Mowbray.
Paul said: “James was nervous but very excited to walk out with Morgan. Before he walked onto the pitch, James had the opportunity to meet all the players as they arrived at the City Ground and watch them warm up from the side of the pitch. When I asked James how it was, he said it was the best day ever! We are very grateful to everyone at Forest for their support.”
Donations can still be made online, as the fundraising page has no deadline. The money goes straight to the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre. You can donate at: https://www.justgiving.com/page/jameskerrywalkatforest
