The 9th West Bridgford (Holy Spirit) Cub pack are proud to have kept the Scout Promise and done their best for the environment. The Cubs, supported by the County Council’s Park Manager, partnered with the Friends of Cotgrave Country Park to plant 107 trees, to produce oxygen, reduce carbon and support local wildlife.
The Cubs chose tree planting as one of their community projects for 2023 (for their other projects they collected food for the Friary and recycled over 1,700 crisp packets!). The trees were generously provided by the amazing Woodland Trust and consisted of a wildlife-friendly mix of hawthorn, blackthorn, sessile oak, rowan and hazel, as well as two wild cherry. The mix is designed to provide food and shelter for birds, invertebrates and mammals, as well as strengthening the park hedge and providing colour and interest for visitors.
While the ground was hard and tools heavy for young hands, the Cubs were enthusiastic and green-fingered. They worked closely together in their Sixes and demonstrated good teamwork in carrying out the different stages of digging, planting and then protecting the young saplings. All in all, it was a job well done and the Cubs were rightly pleased with their woodland legacy, we will return to water and care for them over the summer.
