Clifton Councillors share the importance of biodiversity

13/07/2021 by Digital Media

Over the last month Clifton East Councillors have been giving away some wonderful items to protect bees, insects, birds and hedgehogs. Below Clifton East Councillor Maria Watson talks about the initiative:

7-year-old Jamie building his bee hotel

We believe we must do all we can to ensure the survival of these little creatures. So far, we have had an amazing response from the Clifton community.

There have been Butterfly gardens where children have had the opportunity to watch caterpillars grow, turn into chrysalis and then beautiful butterflies which they release back into the wild, and Bee hotels that can be built and put out into gardens for Bees and bugs to take up residence. Along with these we have little Bird boxes and a Hedgehog House.

The Importance of Biodiversity

  • Increase ecosystem productivity; each species in an ecosystem has a specific niche—a role to play.
  • Support a larger number of plant species and, therefore, a greater variety of crops.
  • Protect freshwater resources.
  • Promote soils formation and protection.

We are currently preparing a Clifton Nature Hunt for families to take part in, they will need to find little insects that will be listed on our search sheet and once completed, they will receive a goody bag with treats in, a medal and certificate.

We are so pleased to be in a position of gifting these items and would like to say Thank you to all those that take part

All details of our Nature hunt will be uploaded onto our Clifton East Councillors Facebook page.
