A New Era for the Major Oak Chorus Begins in 2026

17/04/2026 by Digital Media

The Major Oak Chorus, Nottinghamshire’s oldest male barbershop chorus, is entering an exciting new chapter with the appointment of Angela Sanchez as its new Musical Director, beginning in 2026.

A well-known and respected figure in Nottingham’s music scene, Angela Sanchez (photo below) brings a wealth of experience as an accomplished medal winner singer in choruses, quartets and as a certified musicality judge for the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS). Her appointment signals a fresh creative direction for the Chorus while staying true to its proud heritage of male a cappella singing.

Angela said :“I’m thrilled to be joining the Major Oak Chorus at such an exciting time. The passion, humour, and sense of community within the group is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to helping the Chorus grow musically while making singing accessible and enjoyable for every member.”

Roger Lethbridge, Chair of the Major Oak Chorus, added “Angela’s energy, musicianship, and people-first approach make her a perfect fit for the Chorus. This really does mark the beginning of a new era for us.

The Major Oak Chorus is a male a cappella chorus, affectionately known as “The Oakies.” Based in Nottingham, the Chorus is proud to be a member of the British Association of Barbershop Singers and the Making Music organisation.

With around 25 men from all walks of life, the Chorus proves that you don’t need to be a professional musician to enjoy singing. In fact, only a handful of members can read music — something they share with legendary artists such as Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and Noel Gallagher.

What unites them is a love of music, performance, and camaraderie.

The Chorus performs regularly at local events, shows, and charity fundraisers, and can often be found singing out in the Nottingham community throughout the year.

Singing with the Major Oak Chorus offers more than just music:
•           A powerful way to reduce stress and clear the mind
•           A supportive space to build confidence and self-expression
•           Strong friendships and a shared sense of achievement
•           No instruments required — just your voice

The Major Oak Chorus rehearse at Carlton Junior School (NG4 1QT) at 7:15pm every Tuesday. For more information call 07957 838387.
