The Sunday Fine Food & Craft Market held in the former Barton bus garage in Chilwell, was forced to close in March due to government restrictions in place designed to tackle the Covid 19 pandemic. But, now that the guidelines have relaxed and indoor markets and shops selling none essential goods are permitted, the popular market is back up and running. And, over the summer, Barton Bros who run the event, have doubled the amount of markets. They’re now twice a month, on the first and third Sunday between 10am and 2pm. (August dates are 2nd and 16th)
There are over 30 traders at The Garage who are all local, independent businesses producing high quality products, with even take-out real ale sourced from East Midlands’ breweries. The market prides itself on having prize winning artisan foods on offer including patisserie, sweet and savoury pies, spices and cheeses with several traders having won Great Taste Awards.
Their extensive craft section showcases a range of talented artists and producers many of whom are able to take commissions and produce bespoke items such as jewellery, woodturning, art, home decor and accessories.
The market also has a pop up houseplant shop, a book shop (once a month) and a cafe/bar which is set up outside when the weather is dry.
Previously the market was completely undercover, but for the time being will be held both inside and outside the venue to allow for more space and a manageable queuing system in line with the current guidance on social distancing. Distancing measures have also meant a reduction in the amount of traders at the market, but it is hoped to increase the number in the next few months if guidelines continue to relax.
The market is free to enter and dog and child friendly. It does offer limited parking, but is also has a bus and tram stop outside.
Most of the traders now take contactless payments, there is a one-say system around the market halls and we do monitor visitor numbers throughout the day, so there may be a short wait outside at peak times.
