100 Walks from the Poppy and Pint is now to be available in paperback and is due out on Monday 15th April!
In response to popular demand, this comprehensive guidebook, originally available only online, is now to be published as a limited-edition paperback. ‘100 Walks’ became popular with locals during the pandemic when it released walk after walk in four volumes over a period of two years. The total number of walks eventually totalled 150! The best 100 of these walks has now been assembled into this new paperback version, making it easier for people to see and use.
‘A ridiculous number of walks from a single place – which just proves that our local countryside can be opened up and enjoyed by all’.
This guidebook describes one hundred walks from the doorstep of the Poppy and Pint, in Lady Bay or nearabout. This includes walks east and west along the Trent Valley, as well as north to Colwick and beyond, and south around the Wolds of Nottinghamshire.
It is the most comprehensive volume of walks in the area. Possibly the highest number of walks described from a single place in the entire country – if not the world – if not the entire universe!
The book is written by Jenny McGavin and Trevor Riddiough – both qualified mountain leaders and prolific walkers who live in Lady Bay. They are used to scoping walks, describing them, annotating maps and making walks accessible to others.
During the pandemic they set themselves the challenge of finding and describing 100 quality walks starting and finishing at their local pub – the Poppy and Pint! They discovered footpaths, old and new, and put them to good use making interesting and sometimes challenging walks from 3kms to 25kms long. Something for everyone!
They wanted to show to local people that the countryside of Nottinghamshire is not only worthy but can also generate the same feelings of awe and wonder and challenge and satisfaction as being on any walking tour in the UK or abroad. They also wanted to show to people that there is more choice of quality walks than we might think.
Why travel to the Peak District or beyond when there is all this to enjoy right here? Suddenly, we have a significant group of people exploring their own county and getting to know it well, often for the very first time.
100 Walks from the Poppy and Pint is the result – a vast range of walks from our very doorstep to wild, lonely or interesting locations, with many off the beaten track. Each walk comes with a handy reference guide and map. The book costs £8, with all the proceeds of the sale going to The Friends of the Hook who look after our local nature reserve.
The book will be on sale at the Poppy and Pint from 15th April and is also available to order from the Castle Rock Brewery website – just click on the ‘Poppy and Pint’ and follow the link!
