Children at Burntstump Seely C of E Academy took inspiration from World Book Day to explore stories through dance and drama.
With help from a professional performer Amy Ledger, from West End Workshops, children used a variety of dance, freeze frames and tableau to recreate story book scenes.
Assistant head teacher Mrs Sarah Annable said, “The children loved the workshop and expressing scenes and storylines through dance and drama. It gave children a taste of performing arts delivered by a professional.
“At Burntstump Seely we are always looking at ways to inspire a love of reading in our children and this workshop has inspired our children to use their imaginations to visualise and interpret the stories they read.”
Running the workshop was Amy Ledger who said, “The Children of Burntstump Seely C of E Primary Academy participated in a dance workshop inspired by their chosen book for World Book Day. They enjoyed exploring the story, and all aspects of the workshop. Children used their bodies and worked as a team to create freeze frames to highlight different parts of the story.”
To conclude the workshop, Amy said, the children performed a dance which showcased everything they had learnt. “At ‘West End in Schools’ workshops we use theatre and dance to inspire children’s imaginations. Workshops are delivered across the country and World Book Day is the busiest time of year! I enjoyed working with the children at Burntstump Seely, they were engaged, enthusiastic and came away from the workshop feeling inspired!”
Pupil Harley, age 7 said, “I enjoyed the lesson because it was really fun and entertaining. I liked making the shapes, but my favourite was the boat!” Fellow pupil Charandeep, age 7 agreed saying, “I like dancing and so I enjoyed the lesson too. I also like dancing at home and at parties. This morning we have made lots of shapes and I liked the boat action best too, -because you need two people to work together to make it.”
