A local cricket club is eagerly anticipating the 2023 cricket season. West Bridgford Legion CC, based at West Park on Loughborough Road, celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2022, marking the occasion with several events, including an anniversary match and dinner.
It capped a successful season for the club, where its First XI won promotion to the South Notts Cricket League’s Division F and finished runners-up in the Radio Faza T20 Cup. The club also hosted its annual charity T20 day in August; the last four events have raised over £2,000 for local charities including The Friary and Nottinghamshire Leukaemia Appeal, with the local community’s generous support. Club chairman Chris Roper’s 50 years of service was recognised in Nottinghamshire’s grassroots cricket awards as a Lifetime Achiever.
The club has played at the historic West Park, founded by local benefactor Sir Julien Cahn, who bequeathed it to the community of West Bridgford in perpetuity solely for sport and recreation, since 1947. The club retains its connection to Cahn’s XI; it welcomed descendants of one player to its anniversary match, and competes annually with a Cahn XI-connected, Rutland-based club for the Cahn Cup.
Looking forward to 2023, the club aims to bring on and off field success for its three weekend teams. The club is diverse and inclusive, with players of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. New players are welcome. Outdoor practice is held weekly on Mondays between 5.30-7.30pm in its net facilities at West Park.
