Abi Clark and Amber Franklin, two former East Leake Academy students, set themselves quite a challenge to run the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon for MND.
The course was extremely hilly and the weather was very warm, but they did it, crossing the finish line together in 4hrs 54mins. A great achievement on their first full marathon. Well done girls! Just before the start of the run they had doubled their target, with donations totaling £2,417 for MND and thank everyone who supported them.
Only two weeks beforehand the indomitable Sam Perkins and his brilliant support team decided to run the Leeds Marathon after Sam’s deep disappointment at not completing the entire 26.2 miles of the London Marathon in April (which he called “one more marathon”) when the wheel of his specially adapted wheelchair collapsed. He crossed the finish line but was frustrated that his attempt to cover the entire course was thwarted.
This time he successfully completed what he called “one more marathon +1” alongside rugby legends Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield, finishing in an incredible 4hrs 10mins. Well done Sam and team!
Sam established the charity Stand Against MND and by undertaking challenges and arranging fundraising events, has raised an amazing amount for research for the Nottingham branch of the Motor Neuron Disease Association and the Nottingham Hospice.
The money given to support Abi, Amber and Sam for this latest challenge will be going to a very good cause.
