The Green Climber visited on Tuesday 7th October and did a great job. If you want to see this machine in action go to the Meadow Park Facebook page. On Wednesday 8th October the wonderful volunteers from British Gypsum worked on hedge laying in the Arboretum copse on their monthly visit to the park.
On Saturday 11th October around twenty volunteers turned up for a morning of work in the park. There was much to do, especially tidying up after the visit of the Green Climber the previous Tuesday.
In Hall Field, rakes were used to uncover the ground and thus enable the orchids to thrive next year. This was hard, heavy work. Another task, also hard work, was to barrow loads of limestone grit away from the store in Sculpture Ally and use it to fill in paths and restore the butterfly bank in Play Field. The other bag of limestone chipping, near the Burrows entrance was also used in the park. Volunteers came along with their own wheelbarrows to help in this task. The lighter work included the usual litter pick, some cutting back of overhanging branches/brambles and some work in the shrub border near the mill stone sculpture.
In the next few weeks we will be working on the cut back of blackthorn growth in the Bateman field east border. Hedge laying and general maintenance will be ongoing. We will also be sorting out what to do with the wild service tree near the Bateman Road entrance which was severely damaged in the high winds in early September. We think that pollarding it may encourage regrowth – watch this space. Also the Jubilee Oak has had a new plaque fitted. Lastly some of the trees along the edge of Stonebridge Field (near Gotham Road) have not survived the dry summer. These will be replaced in due course.
Meadow Park Strollers are in the park every Thursday at 1.30 pm and have been enjoying a gentle walk around the park, whatever the weather with up to twenty people joining the walk. To take part, just turn up at the Millstone entrance. For further information contact Anne: 07913 328971.
