Tesco Toton turns gold for 6th Beeston Scout Group

06/06/2025 by Digital Media

6th Beeston Scout Group were the latest group to benefit from the Tesco Golden Grant scheme, after being presented with a huge cheque for £5,000!

Having applied to be part of the Tesco Stronger Starts Scheme, the local scout group were selected along with Attenborough Church Pre School and Brooklands Primary School to be the recipients of up to £1,500.

When paying for items in store with Tesco, shoppers are given blue tokens by the checkout colleagues and they are able to pick which organisation, group or charity they would like to receive the money.

On this occasion, Tesco Toton were selected for a Golden Grant, because of the excellent work they do within their local community. This special recognition is only available twice a year country wide.

Claire, Tesco Toton’s Community Champion explained: “Only twice a year the larger Tesco Stores are selected for a Golden Grant, because of the work they do within their local community. It’s a huge honour to be chosen and I was proud to be part of it.”

Customers were encouraged to pick up a random token out of a bag. This bag had 99 blue tokens and 1 golden token. Retrieving the golden token resulted in one of the three local organisations to receive a bumper £5,000!

A lucky customer who found the Golden token chose 6th Beeston Scout Group to receive this donation. The other two organisations, Attenborough Church Pre School and Brooklands Primary School, won £1,500 and £1,000 respectively.

6th Beeston Scout Group initially applied for the Stronger Starts scheme for a defibrillator for their community and first aid courses for the scout group. The defibrillator has been fitted and the remaining money is to go to towards a mini-bus so all children of different abilities and diverse needs can attend activities which they normally wouldn’t be able to access.

So, when you are shopping at a Tesco please get involved, look at the community notice boards to see what your Tesco has been up to and most importantly take a little blue token and vote for your favourite project. A little blue token (or gold token in this case!) can seriously change the lives of children and young people in the community.

The organisations benefiting from the scheme change every three months and the monies raised for the Stronger Starts Scheme comes from when a customer purchases a bag for life for only 30p.

If you are part of a local all school, registered charity or non-for-profit organisation and feel the Stronger Start Grant could help you, you can apply by going online at: https://tescostrongerstarts.org.uk
