After holding two Christmas concerts in support of Childline, Radcliffe-on-Trent Male Voice Choir were delighted to present a cheque for £4,245 to Barbara Elsey, NSPCC Community Fundraising Manager for the East Midlands.
Once again, the choirs and musicians of local schoolchildren were popular participants and the support and generosity of people in this corner of Nottinghamshire was much in evidence. At the presentation, Barbara described the multi-faceted role that Childline plays in supporting abuse victims and the mental health of children under stress. Childline is a small part of the NSPCC but a vital one. It costs £4 per phone line to be supported so the donation would enable over 1,000 children to be engaged with them.
As if that wasn’t enough, on Valentine’s Day the choir also supported the Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club at their fund-raising coffee morning to support Prostate Cancer UK, a cause close to the hearts of this male choir (well, close in the emotional sense).
This event followed the recent inauguration of the new Lady Captain, Carolynn Sullivan, who had invited the choir along. Carolynn spoke movingly in her welcome address and Robert Oldroyd from Nottingham Prostate Cancer Support Group also spoke about this devastating and all too common disease and the need to fund further research. Resplendent in their Prostate Cancer T-shirts the choir performed six songs, with renditions of ‘Danny Boy’, ‘Let It Be Me’ and ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ surely tugging a few Valentine’s Day heart strings. More importantly, the event raised almost £500. Wishing the new Lady Captain every success in the common cause of beating Prostate Cancer.
