Sunflower lanyards and wristbands raise awareness

05/10/2024 by Digital Media

Sunflower lanyards and wristbands have become a popular way for people and organisations to spot if someone has a non-visible disability, of which there are 900.

Ruddington residents Barbara Breakwell as a person with a Chronic Health condition, Gwynneth Owen as an NHS  worker and Graham Abbott, as a carer collaborated together to raise awareness of what the sunflower symbolises.

Ultimately they want to ensure that “Ruddington recognises that not all disabilities are visible.”

The aim is to encourage people, whatever their age, to show anyone electing to wear a lanyard or wristband, a little more kindness and patience.

Local businesses and organisations enthusiastically supported the initiative by displaying posters and doing window displays adorned with sunflowers.

August was designated as the month to spread the message and an information stall manned by the trio and other residents on the Ruddington Village Market was very well received. Children were able to make sunflower pictures at a session held at the Library and these were displayed in the local Supermarket window.

The campaigning trio were also fortunate to receive financial support to enable them to purchase lanyards and wristbands to be made available to Ruddington residents.

A Facebook page, Ruddington Recognises and an email [email protected] continues to give local residents, businesses and organisations the opportunity to share their experiences and show support for the vision.
