East Leake Academy is thrilled to announce that our year 12 students are actively participating in a pioneering citizen science project aimed at discovering new antibiotics.
As part of this initiative, students have been diligently swabbing various environments where bacteria naturally thrive and compete for resources. These samples have now been sent to the prestigious Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) for advanced testing against antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.
This hands-on project not only immerses our students in cutting-edge scientific research but also provides them with a unique opportunity to collaborate with leading scientists. Through this partnership, our students have gained invaluable insights into potential career paths and the practical applications of their academic studies in real world settings.
Our students have also excelled in the UK Chemistry Olympiad, under the expert guidance of Mrs Nandha-Waterfield. We are proud to announce that one of our students received a silver award, while five others were honoured with bronze awards. The UK Chemistry Olympiad is renowned for its rigorous challenges that inspire students to excel in chemistry, develop critical problem-solving skills, think creatively, and apply their knowledge to practical scenarios.
Mr Reid, principal of East Leake Academy, commented on these achievements, stating, “we are incredibly proud of our year 12 students for their outstanding achievements. Being involved in such significant scientific research and excelling in national competitions reflects the high standards of education and the supportive environment we strive to provide at East Leake Academy.”
East Leake Academy, part of Diverse Academies Trust, remains committed to providing our students with exceptional educational opportunities that inspire and prepare them for successful futures. The accomplishments of our students in both the citizen science project and the Chemistry Olympiad are a testament to their dedication, hard work, and passion for science.
