Leading developer David Wilson Homes is helping to preserve and attract nature at its Skylarks housing development, after unveiling an observation area to encourage more feathered friends to visit the area.
Prior to construction taking place at the development in East Leake, an ecological assessment was carried out in February 2020 which found that skylarks were identified to be present on site.
Following the discovery, a dedicated area to provide an undisturbed nesting habitat was mapped out by David Wilson Homes to be implemented at the south-eastern corner of the development, which has now been completed and unveiled.
John Reddington, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We are delighted to have completed works on our skylark observation area, which will provide a natural and inviting nesting space for wildlife including local skylarks.
“Birds are fascinating creatures and we, as a country, should treasure them and be able to appreciate their mesmerising behaviours up close.
“We hope that the establishment of the area will allow local people and residents at The Skylarks to enjoy observing the birds as they fly to and from the area.”
The observation area is bound with hedge and shrub planting, with a one-metre high fence running along its perimeter.
On the other side of the fencing is a public footpath, that is also being created as part of the housing scheme to improve connectivity with the surrounding area.
There is an access gate to the observation area for the developer’s management company to enter for maintenance. However, the area will be left unattended between March and the end of August for nesting season, in order to enable the establishment of nests.
