Rushcliffe Spencer Academy is thrilled to announce that they have been given the ‘Green with Distinction’ flag, awarded by Eco-Schools, for the amazing work that has been done by the eco team and whole school community.
“Our eco team has gone from strength to strength over the last few years with incredible engagement from students, staff, parents and the wider business community. This year we built on our biodiversity work on the school ground by planting a further 135 trees and hedgerows in addition to the 500+ we planted in the previous academic year and we’re working closely with the building contractors of the school’s latest expansion to support us in preparing sites for future tree planting and ensuring this important work continues,” said Laura Lacey, Head of Geography.
Other work that has been done by the eco committee this year includes: a successful textile recycling scheme, preventing another 207 kg of textiles from entering landfill this year; a classroom recycling initiative; changes within catering at Rushcliffe and also trust-wide; joining a school-specific energy analysis tool and energy education programme and so much more alongside all of this.
On April 22nd the school also celebrated ‘Earth Day’, promoting positivity with the students and wider community by running a competition to design and create a piece to celebrate our Extraordinary Earth. It was a fantastic success with some amazing, creative entries including some from Rushcliffe’s international partner school in Ningbo, China. A selection of the work that students created has even been put on display at Attenborough Nature Reserve for all to enjoy.
Damian Painton, Principal said: “This award is an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the incredible work of the Rushcliffe Eco Reps. I would also like to congratulate all students and staff for their help in increasing environmental awareness and promoting sustainability at Rushcliffe.”
The school has now worked through all stages of the award; bronze, silver, green, green with merit and green with distinction, and has no plans of slowing down with green initiatives around the school.
