On an overcast Thursday evening in May, Robert Miles Junior School travelled to St Peter’s CofE Junior School in Ruddington to take on Lady Bay Primary School in the final of the Rushcliffe Junior Schools Cup.
After a highly competitive first half, the match was still goalless. Both goalkeepers were forced into action as Lady Bay also struck the outside of the post from the penalty spot.
Within two minutes of the restart, Lady Bay took the lead with a well worked goal. A determined Robert Miles Junior School pressed hard for an equaliser and it deservedly came courtesy of a superb header by Josh Singh from a corner.
With the game flashing from end to end and with only 5 minutes remaining, Robert Miles Junior School took the lead 2-1 following a lofted ball forward and another Josh Singh header. The team then defended extremely well and held on for victory.
It was a fitting way for Rob Gilbey to end his time at Robert Miles Junior School as Headteacher. Mr Gilbey had been at the School for over 20 years and retired at the end of the Spring term. It was great for him to come back for the final and help the School lift the trophy for the first time in 16 years!
