With a growing number of families moving from Hong Kong, Robert Miles Infant School was excited to be joining in the celebrations for the new lunar year.
This year is the Year of the Tiger. People born in a water tiger year are thought to very loyal. The tiger is considered to be brave and it is a symbol of power in Chinese culture.
The school was decorated in traditional Chinese colours of red, black and gold. There was a special meal to start the celebrations. The children used chopsticks to eat, some with more success than others!
Teachers planned a variety of fun activities, stories and lessons to learn about the celebrations. Parents have also been involved with the planning, bringing decorations, ideas and traditional dumplings for the children to try. Children were invited to dress up in traditional Chinese colours or clothes.
The celebrations ended with a traditional dragon dance.
“It is important for our children to learn about the different cultures in our community”, said the headteacher, Mrs Adams. “The children made links to their own celebrations at Christmas and talked about the similarities and differences.”
Here are some of the quotes from the children:
“There were lots of decorations in school!”
“I use chopsticks at home but it’s kind of hard to pick up rice!”
“We learnt about the year of the tiger, it was great!”
