Retired man to walk 1,111 miles for Alzheimer’s Charity

03/03/2026 by Digital Media

A retired man from Ruddington is to walk 1,111 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society, despite suffering from arthritis in his shoulder, knees and toes.

Dr Mike Robinson will set off on 2nd March and aims to complete the length-of-Britain challenge by 28th May, covering the entire distance on foot. The demanding route would test even seasoned endurance walkers, but Robinson is determined to turn a personal challenge into meaningful support for families affected by dementia.

One in 14 people over the age of 65 lives with dementia, and a recent close family bereavement has given Robinson added motivation to take on what he describes as a “mammoth” task.

Training has been well underway. Since retiring last June, he has kept to a strict fitness regime at Rushcliffe Arena, combining gym work, spin classes and swimming with long-distance walks across the parish and beyond — often accompanied by his dog and daughter. As part of his preparation, he has already completed the 214-mile Southern Upland Way.

You can follow his progress on Instagram: @mikerobinsonwalks as he makes his way north, and donations can be made via his JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/page/michael-robinson-5
