Children at Burntstump Seely C of E Primary Academy have enjoyed the use of a fully heated swimming pool in their own school playground!
The swimming pool caused such a splash, that it has also featured on ITV News Central following a visit by Education Correspondent, Peter Bearne, who filmed a piece for television.
Head Teacher, Emily Lister explained that the pool, provided by company Elite Swimming – Pools to Schools, was in situ for two weeks. “We were delighted to be able to provide this opportunity for our children, and the response has been amazing. Our motivation to do this was to provide access for all of our children from nursery to year 6, with high quality swimming instruction.”
Emily says previously only a small number of children were able to go swimming at a time because of the logistics of travelling and the capacity of the nearest pool, located some miles away. “This was far more time efficient, removing the travelling time means we could get back to timetable quickly. In addition, all of our year groups were given access to learn such an important life skill. Children made fantastic progress swimming up to 45 minutes per day over the two-week period.”
Pupil Lola age 7 said: “We can’t believe we have a swimming pool in our playground, and we are being taught all kinds of new things. It is really cool! We have been swimming with noodles and without noodles and floating boards, and there is a gusher which makes all of the water nice and warm.”
Lilith is 9 years old and said: “It is really good and the swimming teachers are very nice. I feel so lucky to have this at school, All of the children are excited and when I saw it I nearly started to cry because I love swimming so much!”
Head Teacher Emily says she is pleased with the benefits of accessing a pool on school grounds. “Children are taught in smaller groups and are therefore making more progress. It is also good for mental and physical wellbeing of all of our children; developing their confidence and water safety. Our parents have been so positive about the initiative and once again, it is with their help, that we are able to provide our children with additional opportunities and exciting experiences at school.”
