Pierrepont Gamston pupils shine at National Chess Tournament

13/01/2025 by Digital Media

On Thursday 12 December, five talented pupils from Years 4 to 6 at Pierrepont Gamston Primary School proudly represented Nottingham at the prestigious XTX London Chess Classic competition, held at the iconic Emirates Stadium in London.

The event, organised by Chess in Schools, brought together young chess enthusiasts from over 15 schools across the country for an unforgettable day of learning, competition, and camaraderie.

The day began with expert coaching sessions, where the children had the extraordinary opportunity to learn from and even play against renowned Grand Masters. This invaluable experience was followed by a thrilling competition, where the Pierrepont Gamston team showcased exceptional determination, strategic thinking, and teamwork.

Their hard work and focus paid off in spectacular fashion, with the team securing an impressive second place overall! Individual brilliance was also on display, as the school celebrated a silver and bronze medal from two of its pupils.

Head teacher Mrs. Bills, who accompanied the team, couldn’t hide her pride. “The children played with such skill and determination, but what stood out the most was their incredible attitude. They constantly supported and encouraged one another, showing the very best of sportsmanship and strategy.

“This remarkable achievement highlights not only the students’ chess abilities but also, the entire school community is beaming with pride and congratulates the team for representing Pierrepont Gamston and Nottingham so brilliantly.”

The competition provided memories and lessons that will last a lifetime, inspiring the next generation of chess players at Pierrepont Gamston and beyond.
