Paralympic gold medallist halfway through mammoth challenge

06/06/2025 by Digital Media

We’re halfway through the year, and Nottingham born Paralympic Gold Medallist and professional athlete Richard Whitehead MBE is halfway through his epic challenge of completing 20 marathons around the world in 2025, having already this year taken part in the Dubai, Miami, Malta, Original, Rome, Milan, Paris, Boston, London and Vancouver marathons!

His challenge will finish in New York in November, which will be Richard’s 100 marathon of his career and over 20 years since his very first marathon there in 2004.

Currently the fastest amputee marathon runner in the world, Richard’s challenge is not just about the number of marathons he completes, but to help show that anything is possible, and whatever age or ability you are, everyone has a gift to nurture and potential to fulfil. Richard’s passionate about nurturing this potential and helping to remove whatever barriers there are, and throughout his challenge and career, raises awareness of what it means to live with a disability, and what true inclusion means and the difference this can make.

Reflecting on his challenge so far, Richard told us “Each marathon, in each town, and in each country is so different, I thrive on seeing different cultures, meeting so many different people and connecting with the communities. I know the power of seeing someone like me achieve not just one, but 100 marathons can have, and this motivates me, knowing the difference I can make to someone.”

Richard’s positive attitude and energy is unwavering, and he is dedicated to the power of moving and sport, from both a physical health point of view, improving wellbeing and connecting with a community, and he uses his long career and profile to raise awareness and focus on this.

On 27 September 2025, much closer to home than some of the marathons he has taken part in so far, The Richard Whitehead Foundation’s annual event Run with Rich is taking place at Holme Pierrepont. A fully accessible, family and community event where you can run, walk, push or even scoot the 5k or 1k sensory course, along with entertainment and sports and activities in the inclusive events village. Head to https://www.whitehead.foundation/ to find out more and to confirm your space.

Richard would like to thank everyone across Nottingham for their support throughout his challenge and journey this year, to find out more about him and his challenge, head to his website https://richardwhiteheadmbe.com/ and you can contact him at [email protected]
