In recognition of National Volunteers Week (1 June – 7 June 2020), Nottinghamshire County Council is acknowledging all the valuable work done by the county’s volunteers in coming to the aid of residents at risk and in need of support during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
Since putting out a plea at the end of March for community groups, organisations, businesses and individuals to come forward to support the work of the County Council and partners in Nottinghamshire, over 950 have signed up to pledge their help.
That response has enabled the county and partners to successfully assist in over 960 requests for support from vulnerable residents s who have found themselves either in self-isolation or without the assistance of friends or family.
Councillor Kay Cutts, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, has written to all volunteers to express her appreciation for their efforts and to highlight the real difference they have made to those in need.
Cllr Cutts said:
“At this difficult time it is heartwarming to see people react with such kindness and neighbourly spirit.
“I have been overwhelmed by the stories I have heard from throughout Nottinghamshire of people going above and beyond to help others less fortunate than themselves.
“The Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect all of us and will continue to do so for some considerable period of time. The virus is still live and spreading and it is therefore vitally important that our volunteers continue with their offers of help wherever and for as long as they possibly can. Their fantastic enthusiasm and efforts over the medium and long term will prove crucial in enabling us to come out of this challenge a stronger and more vibrant community.”
Volunteers have been assisting those residents having to stay at home by offering help with a number of essential services such as:
• food supplies and delivery
• collecting and delivering medicines
• personal and social support including dog walking and collecting newspapers
• advice on physical, mental and emotional health
• transport needs.
