NG11 Clean Champions – February update

05/02/2021 by Digital Media

Last year, 2020 was certainly a challenging year on so many fronts. And although Nottingham Clean Champions were not allowed to pick litter for some months due to COVID-19, the total of bags collected for the year is 758!

An amazing team effort; thank you. A special thank you, to Angie and Gavin Storer who went out and continue to go out practically each day. The number of bags collected only covers the bags that are reported to myself or those logged on the Nottingham Clean Champions Facebook page. It’s appreciated that there are other caring residents that go out, but don’t report bags that they collect.  The contribution by all is much appreciated and makes a difference; helping to keep NG11 litter free.

I’ve been asked “Who are NG11 Clean Champions?”. To clarify “we” are local volunteers, residents from East and West Wards of Clifton, (there is a separate team that covers the Wilford area) that have signed up to the Nottingham Clean Champions initiative that Nottingham City Council set up early 2018.

The volunteers are provided with a litter pick, hi-vis vest, gloves and bags. They go out when they have time, they buddy up with other volunteers and participate in organised events (subject to COVID-19 measures). They tend to do the same route, area, road/s.

Next month, I’ll produce a map to show what areas are covered. If you do a particular road or area let me know and I’ll add it to the map.

As per the 2011 census, there are just under 27,000 residents in East and West Clifton. Therefore, if all households simply ensure their house front is litter free, then this would make an enormous difference to the area. As they did in days gone by “keeping your front step clean” was something to be proud of!

To join the effort and to get a free pack, for adults and children: a litter pick, hi-vis vest and gloves. Bags are supplied and thereafter as needed.
