Neighbours celebrate VE Day metres apart during lockdown

13/05/2020 by Digital Media

On Friday 8thMay, the UK joined together to celebrate the 75thanniversary of VE Day amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Millions of people throughout the country fell silent at 11am to remember those who served in World War II. This day marked 75 years since the formal acceptance by Britain and its allies of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender.

One small area in Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham, kept up the community spirit in honouring the day in a safe social distance manner. Residents of Whitworth Drive, Orford Avenue and St Lawrence Drive decorated their streets and sat over 2 metres apart to enjoy the sunshine and celebrate on this landmark day.

Bob Hawkins of Whitworth Drive captured the day with these wonderful photographs documenting a group of neighbours enjoying VE Day festivities whilst keeping safe in lockdown.

All photographs by Bob Hawkins.
