On Saturday 12th December 2020, Cllr. Susan Mallender, Mayor of Rushcliffe visited Cotgrave to recognise the work of the Community Garden as the first Plastic Free Allies of Plastic Free Cotgrave.
A small group of gardeners and volunteers from Plastic Free Cotgrave met in the garden for a brief ceremony, where the Mayor presented an award to the gardeners, who are making every effort to reduce and eliminate single-use plastics from their activities:
- Buying compost in tonne bags and reusing, as well as making their own, to reduce plastic compost bags.
- Using wooden lollipop sticks for labels.
- Using natural twine for supporting plants instead of plastic twine.
The Mayor was really interested in the work of both groups and how they are working together. Both the Community Garden and Plastic Free Cotgrave are closely linked to her ideals as Mayor, focussing on Zero Waste throughout her time in office.
