On 6th and 7th August a team of five friends undertook a mammoth 170 mile coast-to-coast bike ride on the route called “The Way of the Roses”.
Starting at Morecambe on the west coast on Saturday morning, they cycled for 12 hours (109 miles and some steep hills, with only one puncture) until they reached an overnight stop at York.
On Sunday they covered the remaining 61 miles from York to Bridlington on the east coast, where they finished on the North Marine Promenade and were greeted by a small group of supporters. Five beaming faces and ten tired legs!
This mighty challenge was instigated by Katie Price, a physiotherapist at PhysioNeeds in East Leake, but unfortunately Katie had an accident during a training ride the previous week so could only give encouragement to the team from the comfort of the support vehicle which was driven by her Mum Linda.
The team members were Charlie Morris (also of PhysioNeeds), Andy and Karen Bury, Steve Price (Katie’s Dad) and Steve Franklin whose Mum Val was diagnosed with MND last year.
This mammoth effort was to raise funds for the MND charity “Stand Against MND”, which was set up by East Leake resident, Sam Perkins, when he was diagnosed 3 years ago, aged only 37. The charity raises money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, and the Nottingham Hospice.
The cycle challenge has raised over £3,000, including donations given by some lovely strangers en route. If anyone would like to add to this worthy cause in recognition of their achievement, it would be much appreciated.
