We are local twin sisters, Lisa and Michelle, with a combined 40 years’ experience in fashion retail, design and production. We’re extremely passionate about delivering quality and sustainable accessories.
We found ourselves contemplating the impact of Covid-19 on our lives, and in fact, Michelle was travelling frequently to Italy when the virus first started to pick up traction.
Wearing uncomfortable and disposable masks was not ideal. In addition, our sister was at home “shielding” as a clinically extremely vulnerable person. We were really concerned about her and the availability of good quality protective facemasks, so we brainstormed together and Britmask was born.
We’ve always wanted to work on something together and this was great opportunity to do that. We embarked on a lengthy research and development process merging our expertise to create a great product that protects. It was important to us that we bring to market not only a mask that’s extremely protective but also comfortable, washable and reusable.
We started with the design process. The fit was a top priority, so we did a lot of prototypes to ensure that the mask is protective and fits really well. We added a rib structure around the nose so that the mask stays in place. This was important so that no nose wire is required. We also focused on creating, discrete soft comfort ear loops. The mask is seamless, so the fit is exceptional, and we receive many compliments where customers state, ‘it’s the most comfortable mask they have ever worn’ and they forget that they are wearing it. Breathability was important too, so we settled on using a yarn called Dry Yarn – developed for sportswear, it is extremely breathable and quick drying, excellent for its antibacterial properties.
It’s available pre-dyed too which means its colour-fast at 60 degrees. On top we add two premium material finishes: HeiQ Ecodry which is a water-repellent treatment and HeiQ ViroBlock which is antibacterial treatment that has been tested successfully against flu and the Covid series of virus’. Both of these finishes last throughout the wash.
