Amelia Rothwell, aged 11 from Clifton has retained the title of Girls Under 11 Champion at the Nottinghamshire County Table Tennis Championships.
Amelia began her table tennis journey in 2017 at the age of five, training with Dad, Stefan Rothwell, at Clifton Table Tennis Club.
She has always had a passion for the sport and in 2023 she was encouraged by Coach and good friend Trevor Kerry, also of Clifton, to enter the Nottinghamshire County Championships. There were some extremely talented girls in her category, and after a day of very fierce competition she took the title of Nottinghamshire Girls Under 11 Champion.
Following this incredible feat, Amelia wanted to play more table tennis and improve her skills, so she joined Draycott & Long Eaton Table Tennis Club alongside her existing membership at Clifton.
From then she has excelled in the sport, and is now ranked 21st in England in the Under 12 Girls category. She plays competitively in the Loughborough and Cadet Leagues.
In January 2024, Amelia entered the Nottinghamshire Championships again, and for a 2nd time has taken the Nottinghamshire Girls Under 11 title. She will now as a result of this, represent her school, Blessed Robert Widmerpool Academy, in the National Schools Championships on 28th April in Wolverhampton.
“We are immensely proud of Amelia. Her commitment to training and her positive mindset have earned her such an incredible accolade already, and now she is returning to the Nationals! The pupils and staff at Blessed Robert are all behind her every step of the way. We wish her all the luck in the world during her preparation and on the big day. No matter the outcome, she is a star to us!” said Mrs Maylard-Mason, Executive Head Teacher, Blessed Robert Widmerpool.
