Local author releases book to raise money for children’s charity

08/06/2021 by Digital Media

A few months ago, the local news shared the story of an author from Barton in Fabis who had released a book titled Bush-Hog Tails.

Each copy includes her own woodland illustrations and the proceeds from every sale goes to wildlife charities. So far, she has raised over £3,000.

Victoria grew up in East Leake and now works as a carer in a specialised unit for the elderly. She uses her spare time to write, illustrate and research for her books plus she participates in special book signing events at libraries, parks and more.

Victoria Harwood has continued her ambition and has released yet another book, this one titled ‘Fluffy’s Holiday’. The story is about a cat who embarks on a little holiday.

Victoria said, “As a hobby I write and self-illustrate children’s books and am very proud to say that I donate all of the profits from the sales of my books to wildlife charities. I have so far raised just over £3,000 for different rescues and sanctuaries.

“I’m always trying to do different things to help animals and people. During the 2020 lockdown I encouraged strangers to come together on social media and help me write a new story called ‘Fluffy’s holiday’.

“I started the story off and then each person participating had to check what the previous person before them had written and then write a segment themselves.

“I then completed the story, edited it, did a few illustrations and then had the story printed into a couple of books using an online photograph company.

“Now I have a copy of the book which is being donated to an establishment (a children’s hospice or children’s home) and another copy which I am using for a fundraising auction. All the money donated will be going to Great Ormand Street Hospital children’s charity.”

“Whoever donates the most money will win a copy of this very unique book.”

Victoria continued, “I work in a specialised dementia unit for the elderly, so this has been a long process for me, majority of my spare time goes into trying to do things for others!

“I’ve been working during the entire pandemic so I feel extremely proud that I’ve managed to help others feel a little happier and helped break a bit of boredom and give a bit of positivity to people during a difficult time.“
