David Phillipson from Bingham is an athlete at the highest possible level and at the start of August represented his Great Britain at the ICF Canoe Sprint & Paracanoe World Championships in Canada.
After a first place finish in his heat, David lined up in lane 4 for his KL2 Men 200m Final. It was a tight race from start to finish and David finished in a superb 2nd place and gained a silver medal.
After the event, David said: ‘I’m buzzing to say the least didn’t expect that! Silver medal at world champs. Raced my heart out. Thanks for everyone supporting me and thanks to my sponsors Belvoir Bakery, Bar 15 & Yeung Sing at The Bingham Townhouse.’
In 2016, David took a difficult decision to move to canoeing from wheelchair tennis where he had been competing internationally for a number of years. His decision to move sports now really looks to be paying off after this recent success.
At the end of August, David also took part in the European Championships, where he won a bronze medal. Another remarkable achievement after having Covid the week before the event!
The hard work for David doesn’t stop here and he’ll be targeting more medals before the Paralympics in Paris in 2024.
