Kind hearted Nan knits winter hats for local school class

08/02/2023 by Digital Media

Clifton school children have been treated to hand knitted hats thanks to their class teacher and her nan teaming up to help keep her class even warmer this winter.

Miss Taylor, Year 5 teacher and English Lead at Whitegate Primary School in Clifton, and her Nan – known as “Poppa Nan” worked together so every child could receive a special  warm winter hat to enjoy and embrace the colder winter weather and continue to take their learning outdoors.

Coming up with the idea in September, as the knitting project progressed, Miss Taylor was amazed at how her nan, from multiple balls of wool, quickly knitted the 32 hats (plus one for herself!) and added her own surprise by hand stitching individual hearts onto each hat, to remind her and to remind every child just how much they are cared for.

When Miss Taylor presented the hats to the children they were delighted, she said, “It was amazing that my nan could team up with me to provide this treat for the children and the children and myself are very grateful to her.  Whitegate school is part of Transform Trust, a multi-academy trust with Kindness as one of its core, fundamental values that weaves into their every day practice. These hats serve as a physical gesture and reminder that kindness can be simple, and can have a huge impact on other people.  It’s wonderful that the children choose to wear the hats every day outside and it was lovely to see how proud they were to show them off to their parents and talk about how kind it was of my nan to make them.

Miss Taylor’s “Poppa Nan” said: “It was a pleasure knitting these lovely hats with my friends for the children at Whitegate Primary School, making sure my granddaughter also had a hat to keep her warm on playground duty! It’s really cold this winter so I thought them each having a hat each was a wonderful idea”

Karen Goodrum, one of the parents of Class 11 at Whitegate Primary School messaged Miss Taylor that evening and said: “Erin hasn’t taken hers off yet, she even sat and ate her tea wearing it!”

It is clear that the children really appreciated this kind gesture from their much-loved teacher and her superstar “Poppa Nan”, who also encouraged her friends to help her knit these wonderful wool hats for her class.
