J9: NCHA opens its doors to safety and support

01/01/2026 by Digital Media

People affected by domestic abuse can now find confidential help and guidance at NCHA’s Clifton office – an officially recognised J9 safe space.

Anyone in need of advice is welcome to visit the site and ask for support at the main reception. Trained staff will offer a private, designated room where visitors can talk safely and receive advice and signposting to specialist services. Look for the J9 logo in the window – it signals that this is a safe place to seek help and start a conversation.

The office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays) and is located off Farnborough Road at Clifton Place, 9 Fairham Brook Drive, NG11 8PY.

“Creating a J9 safe space in Clifton is a powerful step towards making support more accessible,” said Lauren Richards, NCHA’s Domestic Abuse Lead. “We know how hard it can be for someone to reach out – having a safe, welcoming place in the heart of the community can make all the difference.”

Safe spaces in the community

The J9 initiative is a nationally recognised scheme that helps people find safe, discreet locations where they can ask for help. Named in memory of Janine Munby, a mother-of-two tragically killed by her ex-partner in 2003, J9 safe spaces are designed to be accessible and welcoming, with trained staff ready to listen and respond.

NCHA has been supporting communities across the East Midlands for over 50 years. The organisation manages more than 10,000 affordable homes and delivers close to a million hours of care and support each year. Domestic abuse services are a key part of its work, including refuges and community-based support in Nottingham and Derbyshire.

By becoming a J9 safe space, the Clifton office is helping to make support more visible and accessible – especially for those who may not know where to turn or feel unsure about asking for help.

Spread the word

If you or someone you know needs help, visit NCHA’s Clifton office or search online for other J9 safe space locations.

Domestic abuse often happens behind closed doors, and many people don’t know where to turn. By talking about safe spaces like J9, you can help break that silence. Whether it’s mentioning it to a friend, posting on social media, or sharing the J9 logo when you see it, every action helps raise awareness and could make a real difference.

A simple conversation could change a life – and sometimes, knowing where to go is all it takes to make that first step possible.
