The sky was dark, but the rain held off and the sun broke through on Sunday 9 November as hundreds of local people, councillors, uniformed organisations and other groups came together to remember the fallen in wars past and present and to pray for peace.
In Clifton, Remembrance Day is especially poignant as the memorial we gather at is in memory of Lance Corporal Kieron Hill – a soldier from Clifton who lost his life in the war in Afghanistan.
This year, we were delighted to welcome our MP Lilian Greenwood who read a Bible passage from John’s gospel, reminding us of Jesus’ command to his friends to love one another; members of 44th Nottingham Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Association read a moving reflection from soldiers in World War 1 and 1st Clifton Scouts led our prayers.
At 11am, everyone fell silent and I am always struck by how powerful that moment of shared remembrance is. Then, whilst the wreaths were laid, our piper played a heartfelt rendition of Amazing Grace followed by a small child reading out the words:
“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
After the service, we were able to warm up down at the Shed for refreshments and entertainment.
Remembrance Sunday is a special moment for our community and all people, of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to join in each year, beginning at 10.45am.
Ever living God, we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence; may that same peace calm our fears, bring justice to all peoples and establish harmony among the nations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
