To follow World Poetry Day (21st March), winning pupils who took part in a competition with Barratt Homes have had their poems framed and displayed at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham City Centre.
Youngsters from Carnarvon Primary School in Bingham designed vibrant posters with poems as a thank you to NHS volunteers for their commitment to helping others and saving lives throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Developer Barratt Homes – which is building new homes locally in Bingham at Romans’ Quarter – crowned Caitlin (10) and Oscar (8) the winners of its competition for their exceptional poems, rewarding them each with a £25 Amazon gift voucher.
Each pupil who took part in the competition was also rewarded with chocolate as a thank you from the housebuilder.
Staff at the Queen’s Medical Centre, which is part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), were delighted to receive and display the poems at the vaccination centre as a vibrant reminder of the praise given by the schoolchildren.
Laura Mitchell, Vaccination Lead at NUH, said: “We were extremely impressed with the poetry winners from Carnarvon Primary School.
“Our NHS workforce have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to care for those suffering with COVID-19 and those maintaining existing services to support all our patients. It was a great honour to have been presented with these two poems they shall take pride of place within our vaccination hubs.
“I would urge you to come forward if you are eligible for your Covid-19 vaccination, it will help to keep you safe and all those around you.”
Andrew Board, Headteacher at Carnarvon Primary School, said: “We are all so grateful to the NHS for everything they do to look after us generally and, in particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic that we were really happy to take part in the competition.
“Our children love to write especially when it is for such a worthy cause and it is great to see Oscar and Caitlin recognised for their efforts.”
Mark Cotes, Managing Director at Barratt Homes North Midlands, said: “It has been so wonderful to see all the poem posters submitted by the talented pupils of Carnarvon Primary School.
“The heroism displayed by the NHS throughout the pandemic has been phenomenal, and we wanted to give local schoolchildren a voice to express what this means to them through poetry on World Poetry Day.
“We’d like to give a huge thank you to all participants at Carnarvon Primary School for helping to brighten people’s days, and of course to our incredible NHS, whose outstanding and courageous efforts will never be forgotten.”
