Twenty years ago, a gas explosion destroyed a warden controlled sheltered housing block on Walcote Drive, West Bridgford. One person died in the explosion and three people were taken to the QMC.
This afternoon the Seventh Day Adventist Church held a remembrance service at the Community Hall on Walcote Drive. County Councillor Gordon Wheeler addressed the community at the service and recalled the severity of the blast, but how the death toll could have been higher, because shortly before the blast school children had been walking by the housing block. He also thanked the Fire Service who were on site until 3am the next morning. Local resident Michael, who contacted the Church to ask for a service, also spoke and he praised the resilience of the local community.
