Gardening Tips for Spring

14/03/2022 by Digital Media

By Greener Gardens

Easter is on the horizon and longer days herald the start of spring. As the sun warms the soil spring bulbs such as daffodils, narcissi, iris and even early tulips will be opening up to brighten the garden. It’s time to tidy up beds and borders and to make sure weeds don’t take hold.

Beds and Borders

Nothing is more welcome than the bright clean yellow colours of miniature daffodils. To ensure your display looks good for the longest time, pick off all the faded flower heads.

Feeding is top priority all around the garden, especially for herbaceous plants and summer flowering shrubs and trees that are bursting into growth again.

Lawncare

You can hear the sounds of mowers and smell the scent of new cut grass. For a great summer lawn cut your grass frequently, but not too short. A weekly trim now, gradually reducing the height of cut in May so that it gets down to it’s minimum length of 2-3cm.

Lawn grasses will have started growing as the soil warms up and mowing needs to start in earnest. As you mow you may notice that there are thin, bare patches and the colour of the remaining grass is verging towards pale yellow, rather than rich green. If you look harder, then you may spot patches of moss in shady areas and the inevitable weed marring the look. If you can spot any two of these symptoms apply a proprietary triple action lawn feed ie feed, weed and moss control. It not only kills moss and broadleaved weeds such as dandelions, daisies and white clover, but it greens up the grass for up to 6 weeks. If all that sounds like hard work, contact Greener Garden for a Free No Obligation estimate.

Remember, regular mowing is a vital part of lawn care. A quick whiz with a sharp and well-adjusted mower will only take you a few minutes if you do the job every week.

Grow your Own

April is a busy month because seeds of most crops can be sown now. You don’t need an allotment. You can grow your veg in raised beds, wooden frames and wicker baskets are available in which to grow vegetables or perhaps choose a vegetable planter, well worth the extra money for a space on the patio.

Patio Tubs & Baskets…

After winter shaded areas of paved patios may be covered with a slimy green mould, moss and algae. It is not only unsightly but also very slippery. You can use a pressure sprayer to jet it off, but that does destroy the surface of the paving. Using a stiff yard brush and get scrubbing could be hard work or contact us for a biocide treatment and the job’s done.

If you would like help with any lawn or hard surface projects, please do not hesitate to call Greener Gardens on 0115 837 8439. We would be delighted to provide a no obligation quotation.
